The US President is scheduled to land in London on Thursday evening, for a three-day "working visit".

The demonstrations are expected to attract large crowds.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has had a number of social media spats with the president, gave permission for a blimp portraying Donald Trump as an orange, snarling baby to be flown over parliament.

Allan Hogarth, head of policy at Amnesty International U.K., said Trump's visit is a major "opportunity for the show that peaceful protest is an essential component of a free and fair society, not something to be shut down as a political embarrassment".

And tension could be sparked as Mrs May expects the United States president to remember the "malign behaviour" of Russian Federation when he meets Mr Putin.

Trump "has proudly sparked passionate often divisive emotions about things, I think Americans living here to eager to turn out and express their views", he said.

She added: "So there's a very serious message behind this but what we're hoping is that on Friday this can be a symbol that people, no matter what they're campaigning on, can get behind, and can feel that this is representing them and all their campaign issues".

February 20, 2017: Thousands of anti-Trump protesters rally outside Britain's Parliament while lawmakers inside urge the government to rescind its offer to the president of a state visit stamped with pomp, pageantry and royal approval.

Last month, Labour member of Parliament Gavin Shuker ran down a list of objections to Trump: the separation of migrant families and detention of children; the USA departure from the United Nations' Human Rights Council; the US president's praise for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Months later, Trump said he had not meant to cause offence in Britain.

He will partake in a black-tie dinner on Thursday at Blenheim Palace with the Prime Minister, before meeting The Queen for tea at Windsor Castle on Friday.

The president's first official visit to the United Kingdom is expected to be overshadowed by mass demonstrations, with more than 50,000 people signed up to take part in protests in the capital. No, that's not true: an old story from January about Trump aborting a visit to open the new U.S. Embassy suddenly went viral again in July, causing many people to believe Trump had blown off the July visit too.

The Jameson in Hammersmith, southwest London, is changing its name to The Trump Arms to mark the trip and is hosting a welcome party in his honour.
