Not the kind of investigation that Richard Nixon was subjected to, that Bill Clinton was subjected to. No. The rights of consumers: "that's #WhatsAtStake", U.S. Sen.

Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., says Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's nominee to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court, is a "disappointing pick" because of his rulings on the National Security Agency's controversial surveillance techniques. And that may be the problem. They'd weight power further toward corporate wealth and and make it harder for the people to use lawsuits and votes to challenge political elites.

Another issue the opposition will press him on is whether he would maintain Roe v. Wade, which as a judge, he shouldn't have to comment on. "The third messaging plank is, 'choose your own adventure'".

Garland's nomination came in March, nine months before an election.

In addition, Kavanaugh's handed down a concurring opinion in the 2015 case Priests for Life v. HHS, in which the Appeals Court for District of Columbia circuit upheld accommodations for faith-based nonprofits to be exempt from the Affordable Care Act's requirement that employers include contraception in the insurance plans they offer to employees.

"Our phone is ringing off the hook", said Nan Aron, who founded the liberal Alliance for Justice Action Campaign in 1979. And past year his debts were paid off. But that fight featured a simple, clear argument - save the ACA - and the clear risk that millions of Americans could lose their health care. "Can we stop being crybabies in the Democratic Party?"

But without the votes to block Kavanaugh's nomination, Democrats inside and outside the Senate are searching for ways to throw roadblocks in front of the process - and potentially raise enough concern that at least one Republican senator will defect to oppose the selection. The GOP is praying for unity while hoping to see support from a few red-state Democrats.

"An "operative" makes it sound like someone who just sort of didn't care what the facts were and was only interested in painting it in its most unflattering" light, Leipold said. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Sen.

Barber argues that Kavanaugh, if given the opportunity, would be the swing vote in overturning Roe, which legalized abortion nationwide. While further undermining or overturning Roe v. Wade would enable states to preserve choice, that does not guarantee reproductive rights for ME women.

He also criticised New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for "failing to advance legislation that would protect women's rights on the state level by empowering the right-leaning Independent Democratic Conference (IDC)".

Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, the nation's largest environmental group, said Kavanaugh "continually and reliably sides with corporate polluters and the wealthy over the public's right to breathe clean air and drink clean water".

"Judge Kavanaugh has also written some troubling things about environmental protections, consumer protections, and common-sense gun safety laws - all of which should be carefully examined by this Senate and by the American people before we have any hearings", Schumer said. I seem to recall Ginsburg once questioning if the court should have even considered Roe V Wade.

The abortion issue is of particular importance this year, when women have emerged as the driving force in the Democratic Party. Now that it's Kavanaugh, the more establishment choice, maybe not.

For Republicans, Kavanaugh represents the culmination of a decadeslong effort to tilt the balance of the country's highest court. "But at the top of the list is healthcare", he said. Kavanaugh clerked for Kozinski from 1990 to 1991.

By 9:18 p.m., Judge Kavanaugh had expressed his thanks for the honor and introduced.
