"I'm looking at last year's experience as a positive one and the one that I can learn from especially in my psychological approach to the match", Cilic said.

"So the "RF" logo is with Nike at the moment, but it will come to me at some point", Federer said. He is the first man in the Open era to play in the grass-court Grand Slam for a 20th straight year.

Federer was pushed to a tie-break in the opening set when he met the same player in the second round a year ago - but he needed just 20 minutes to hit the front this time around.

While his game is flawless to the tee, the tennis star recently recalled an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction episode during his 2007 Wimbledon win and even went on to call it his funniest moment in tennis. The match lasted just 61 minutes.

Having defeated Federer eight days earlier to claim the title in Halle, the 16th-seeded Croat had been scheduled for a third-round meeting with the reigning champion at the All England Club. The 22-year-old Russian next faces Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain.

Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., opened with a 7-5, 6-0, 6-1 victory over Britain's Liam Broady while Peter Polansky, also of Thornhill, dropped his first-round match to Austria's Dennis Novak.

Federer played at 65 successive slams from the 2000 Australian Open, until missing the French Open in 2016.

The 36-year-old Swiss, seeded one, has been placed in the same half of the draw as in-form Croatian third seed Marin Cilic who he beat in last year's final.
