An emotional Lewis Hamilton put Mercedes on pole position for his home British Grand Prix on Saturday after giving his all to stay ahead of Ferrari's Formula One championship leader Sebastian Vettel in a knife-edge qualifying.

"I will feel it a little bit tonight".

That dropped the Mercedes man to the back of the pack and Raikkonen was handed a ten second time penalty, served at the first round of pit stops. "The race was fantastic", Vettel said after claiming his fourth win of the season.

Vettel was left stuck between the two Mercedes drivers as Bottas took the lead.

Kimi Raikkonen ruined Lewis Hamilton's race at the British Grand Prix when he tagged the Brit, pitching him into a spin.

Vettel pitted for new tires while the safety vehicle was out following Marcus Ericsson's crash. It nevertheless marked an impressive drive from the 2007 world champion following his earlier penalty.

A seething Hamilton labelled the shunt from the Finn as "interesting tactics" in a post-race jibe at Mercedes' rivals but, in a now deleted Instagram story post, Raikkonen's wife made her feelings clear on the issue.

When the Safety Car came in, Bottas surged clear while Hamilton defended from Verstappen before Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean collided at Copse, triggering another Safety Car.

Vettel said after the race that it was "silly" to think that either incident had been deliberate, pointing out that he had damaged his own race prospects in the collision in France. Don't give up, mate!

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas also played down the incident and the accusations. "I know I'm not ideal", he wrote.

Vettel's best chance came on Lap 47 when he was able to gain six-tenths through the first sector before popping DRS open on the Wellington Straight. Bottas then let Hamilton past to challenge the German.

Bottas was fourth with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo fifth and Nico Hulkenberg sixth for Renault. Bottas, still on medium tires, was soon struggling, and Ferrari was celebrating when Raikkonen went past to go third.
