SC primary voters like Trump's tax cuts, medical marijuana

With nearly all of the vote counted, challenger Katie Arrington leads Rep. Mark Sanford by 4 percentage points (and almost 3,000 votes) in South Carolina's first congressional district.

Republican Senator Bob Corker, who declined to run for re-election in conservative Tennessee after tangling with Trump, said on Wednesday the party was now in "a odd place", and not a good one. Sanford, who was married, fell in love with an Argentinian woman, Maria Belen Chapur, and went to visit her after telling his staff that he would be "hiking the Appalachian trail".

But Trump saved his first two tweets while back in the National Capital District's airspace for the now-departing SC congressman - and his opposition of Sanford exposed a rare chasm between himself and conservative Republicans.

Less than three hours before the polls closed, President Trump took to Twitter with the message: "Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA". Sanford, a member of the hard right House Freedom Caucus, has always been one of the few congressional Republicans willing to openly break with Trump.

"I would start by praising the president - what he's doing in North Korea, what he's done on tax reform, what he's done with the Supreme Court. and then say, 'But here's an issue in my local area where I have some disagreement or I'd like to be something different, '" Collins said.

In North Dakota and Nevada, voters set the stage for two of the most competitive U.S. Senate races in November, when Democrats must pick up two seats to capture a Senate majority.

"Our republic was based on reason", Sanford told Politico.

In an interview with Politico past year, Sanford said Trump had "fanned the flames of intolerance" and called him unprepared for the presidency.

"He is MIA and nothing but trouble", Trump tweeted, adding, "He is better off in Argentina".

Sanford's seat is likely to remain in Republican hands no matter the victor of Tuesday's primary. She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes.

Sanford also reiterates "It may have cost me an election in this case, but I stand by every one of those decisions to disagree with the president". "He is better off in Argentina". But the president suggested otherwise in his tweet: "Don't underestimate Corey, a major chance of winning!".

Caleb Frostman, the Democrat running in Wisconsin State Senate District 1, claimed victory in Tuesday's special election and Frostman's campaign manager, Hannah Akbik, told CNN that Republican Andre Jacque conceded the race in a phone call with the Democrat.

Democrats will also be watching the outcomes of Virginia's 2nd District (GOP Rep. Scott Taylor), 7th District (GOP Rep. Dave Brat) and 5th District (retiring GOP Rep. Tom Garrett), where they hope to be competitive in the fall. He says he plans a "vicious" general election campaign against Kaine, who battled Trump as Hillary Clinton's vice-presidential candidate and has a huge fundraising advantage.

Comstock, a moderate Republican who easily beat back a challenge from conservative Shak Hill, is one of the Democrats' top targets in November.

Incumbent McMaster is seeking to be elected to remain in office after taking Nikki Haley's position in 2017 when she was appointed by Pres. Donald Trump to serve as UN Ambassador.
