Trump later commented that he believed he will have a "terrific relationship" with Kim and that the pair had enjoyed a "fantastic meeting".

Other pages showed U.S. and North Korean officials having their extended meeting, a working lunch and later, Trump and Kim signing a joint agreement that marked the end to the summit.

The credibility of that claim is in doubt.

Kim takes similar precautions during his travels inside North Korea to inspect military bases and state-run factories, according to South Korea news agency DailyNK.

The vice president also paid tribute to the family of the American college student Otto Warmbier, who died past year after being imprisoned in North Korea.

The U.S. has stationed combat troops in South Korea since the end of the Korean War in the 1950s and has used them in a variety of drills.

What does the deal lack?

But no rational and objective observer who followed the summit and saw Trump and Kim behaving so cordially can believe that Trump is leading the US into a nuclear war with North Korea.

"The secretary is in full alignment with the president to meet his goal, which is denuclearization of the peninsula", Pentagon chief spokeswoman Dana White said.

But critics charged the summit legitimised Kim, whose regime has been accused of multiple human rights abuses, and said the summit was more about headlines than substantive progress.

He later called Trudeau "very dishonest & weak" and refused to sign a joint statement following negotiations. Instead, the meet will set the ball rolling for a long dialogue between the two nuclear powers.

French President Emmanuel Macron said "international co-operation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks". A few hours earlier, Trudeau had told reporters that all seven leaders had come together to sign the joint declaration.

But it failed to pass muster, with Kim's sister Kim Yo-jong reaching into her pocket and pulling out a special pen for him to use as he entered the room with the USA preisdent.

The United States did, however, commit to suspending joint military exercises with South Korea, Trump told reporters before departing the summit site.

"Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea, " Trump tweeted. Typically foreign policy is not a major concern for mid-term voters.

How has the deal been received?

Tokyo also, however, cautioned that despite Pyongyang's pledge for denuclearisation no concrete steps had been taken and that Japan would not let down its guard.

There were worries, especially in Tokyo and Seoul, which have huge USA military presences, about Trump agreeing to halt US military exercises with South Korea, which the North has long claimed were invasion preparations. He added that the initial agreement between Trump and Kim had not captured all of what had been agreed by the two sides.

Chinese state media described the summit as a "starting point" but said "no-one would expect the half-day summit to be able to iron out all differences and remove deep-seated mistrust between the two long-time foes".

"They didn't address what was happening to the people in North Korea - all he did was praise Kim Jong-un".

But there is wide spread agreement among both Republicans and Democrats that the United States must maintain its pressure campaign on North Korea until the denuclearization demands are met and verified.

Meanwhile, The New York Times also made a decision to have fun with Trump's fake movie trailer.
