The North Korean autocrat's every move will be followed by 3,000 journalists up until he shakes hands with Trump.

When asked what he learned about Mr Kim, the United States president said: "I learned he's a very talented man and I also learned he loves his country very much".

Suzanne DiMaggio, who facilitated the first official discussions between North Korea and the Trump administration a year ago, recently said that without aides present "the fear is that he [Trump] might give away too much".

After shaking hands again with Kim in front of the cameras, Trump gave a thumbs-up before starting the first meeting between an incumbent US president and a DPRK leader.

Kim and Trump have also agreed to work together on the recovery of remains of soldiers from both sides who died in the Korean war. "We have watched the struggles, and the sacrifices and the progress of the people", he said.

Trump's retort included mention of his own "nuclear button" - one that doesn't actually exist.

Meanwhile, Law and Home Affairs Minister Shanmugam is confident that security is in place for the Trump-Kim summit.

"We overcame all kinds of skepticism and speculations about this summit and I believe that this is good for the peace", he said. Complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization, he told reporters, "is the only outcome that the United States will accept".
