QINGDAO, China-China's President Xi Jinping warned against unilateralism and trade protectionism as he, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Central Asian leaders used a regional meeting to criticize USA policy.

"I believe it's necessary to stop this creative babbling and shift to concrete issues related to real cooperation", Putin told reporters in the Chinese city of Qingdao, when asked to comment on a G7 joint statement.

Putin took a detour en route to a security summit in the Chinese port city Qingdao in order to accept the medal - China's "highest state honour" awarded to foreigners - at a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, reports Singapore-based newspaper The Strait Times.

Bloomberg News' Shannon Pettypiece said these arguments have been made to Trump and people close to him have warned about the idea of a summit with Putin.

"The president's support for inviting Russian Federation back into the G-7, just after they meddled in the election to support his campaign, will leave millions of Americans with serious questions and suspicions", Schumer said.

"The very fact that we confirm the high level of our interaction and talk about the need for its development, in my opinion, is of great importance, for contemporary worldwide relations, for Russian-Chinese relations", he said.

He added that Moscow will continue to honour its obligations under the Iranian nuclear deal.

"The U.S. president has repeatedly said that it's reasonable to hold such a meeting", he said.

Later in the day, Presidents Xi and Putin joined other ministers of state from both countries to watch a friendly hockey match between the Chinese and Russian national teams.
