Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (R) meets with US President Donald Trump during the G7 Summit in the Charlevoix town of La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada on June 8, 2018.

President Trump on Saturday said the United States will not endorse a G7 communique via a tweet accusing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of making "false statements".

Macron and Trudeau had criticized Trump's tariffs on imports of aluminum and steel into the country, with Macron suggesting that the USA could be excluded from a joint statement.

He wrote on his Twitter profile: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the USA massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers".

Within minutes of the official release of the document, Trump attacked Trudeau on Twitter over what he described as the prime minister's "false statements" during the closing news conference - and the president announced the USA would no longer endorse the communique.

The German leader said there was broad agreement among G7 leaders that tariffs and other trade barriers should be reduced.

Officials say Canada and Mexico have proposed member nations gather every five years to review the treaty.

As he headed to a G7 summit in Canada, Mr Trump said: "Russia should be in the meeting".

Before Trump's late-day tirade issued after he left the country, the exclusive club produced a communique exposing other areas of discord.

Trump has announced tariffs of up to $150 billion on Chinese goods over USA complaints of Beijing's trade practices and its alleged theft of US technology.

Canada, the summit host and the nation that has borne much of the brunt of Trump's trade fusillades in recent days, is holding out hope that progress can be made on less controversial issues such as gender equality and economic growth.

At issue are USA tariffs against Canada and Trudeau's effort to retaliate against its neighbor - as well as Trudeau's comment to reporters that all seven leaders had come together to sign a joint declaration after the G-7 meeting.

In their communique, the leaders of the US, Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan agreed on the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" and the importance of fighting protectionism.

The president said he was unconcerned about raising a trade ruckus at the gathering that usually emphasizes unity and downplays its disagreements. "Or we're going to make a deal directly with Canada, directly with Mexico", Trump said Saturday.

Pelosi also referenced Mr. Trump's earlier comments that the G7 should allow Russian Federation back in.

Trump has provoked outrage and unsettled markets by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to the United States.

Merkel's proposal was strongly supported by other leaders at the meeting, the official said, adding that European Commission President Juncker said he was ready to invest personally in it.
