NASA peers into the rainfall of Eastern Pacific' Tropical Storm Aletta

This season NOAA is predicting 10 to 16 named storms, 5 to 9 are expected to become hurricanes and 1 to 4 of them could become major hurricanes.

Forecasters said Aletta is now a Category 3 hurricane.

In order for a hurricane to qualify as a Category 4 storm, it would have to produce winds between 130 to 156 miles per hour, according to NASA, and Aletta seems determined to top that category.

The hurricane is forecast to move roughly parallel to the Mexican coast for several days and then head farther out into the Pacific Ocean. It had 45 miles per hour maximum sustained winds and was moving west at 6 miles per hour, the NHC's 11 a.m. EDT update said. This rise in the storm has been a swift one, and it had become the tropical storm on Wednesday, and it has puttered throughout the day. Breaking waves and rip currents will be a threat along those beaches into at next week.

The first hurricane, and the first major hurricane, of 2018 has formed (a major hurricane is considered a Category 3 or higher). An average Eastern Pacific hurricane season sees the first hurricane form by June 26. Out in the Pacific, there are two tropical storms we're watching.
