Nabil Fekir's proposed move to Liverpool collapses

The two clubs had been discussing a deal for the playmaker worth 60m euros (£52.75m) - 55m (£48.35m) plus a maximum of 5m (£4.4m) add-ons.

But Fekir himself fully expected to be a Liverpool player before heading to the World Cup next week.

Quickly becoming the transfer saga nobody wanted, Liverpool's pursuit of Lyon's Nabil Fekir appears to be at an end.

"The transfer has not been done and even less so at this price", Jean-Michel Aulas, the Lyon chairman said in a message to l'AFP.

"Olympique Lyonnais categorically denies the false information disseminated by many media about the transfer of Nabil Fekir to Liverpool".

However, reports in France suggested the delay may be down to Lyon's accountancy practices wanting the deal to be completed in the new financial year.

A product of Lyon's successful youth academy, the skillful forward has 58 goals in 161 games for Lyon. The Brazilian superstar moved to Barcelona for a fee of €120m, which, in turn, allowed Liverpool to splash the cash on Fekir this summer.

Liverpool have already made some strong strides in the transfer market this summer, having recruited Fabinho from Monaco on top of the pre-agreed arrival of Naby Keita, and securing Fekir ahead of the World Cup would continue their excellent business.

The 24-year-old looked odds-on to join the Reds at some point this weekend after holding talks with the Premier League outfit and undergoing a medical. That's logical, we've done it for other players.
