Virginia National Guard soldier arrested after police chase stolen armored vehicle

A soldier stole an armored personnel carrier from a Virginia National Guard base and led police on a more than 60-mile chase before being arrested, according to authorities.

Virginia State Police pursued a stolen armored personnel carrier north on Interstate-95 from Dinwiddie County to Richmond.

State police said they were notified at 7:55 p.m. that the vehicle, which is not equipped with a weapon, was taken from Fort Pickett. As the vehicle's maximum speed was about 40 miles an hour, it wasn't quite a high-speed chase - but it was certainly dramatic.

During a press conference, Virginia state police spokeswoman Keeli Hill said that the driver was tased by police at 9.40pm local time and charges are now pending. The personnel carrier was returned to Fort Pickett with "no significant damage".

Parker Slaybaugh, a former WRIC reporter, shared the incredible video of the suspect vehicle being followed by police on Broad Street. He had his personal weapon with him during the pursuit but did not have ammunition, the Guard said.

"I didn't just run in to an APC and drive it off", Yabut said.

Even Yabut himself posted video and photos during his joyride. reports Yabut posted several times on social media about his lack of satisfaction with his position in the National Guard.

The chase lasted more than an hour, but the driver eventually stopped and surrendered after officers closed exits on the highway he was driving on. The base is used for National Guard training. Police couldn't stop it, so they ended up escorting it, sirens blaring, before Yabut stopped and got out near City Hall.

According to a filing with the Federal Election Commission, Yabut also meant to run for Tim Kaine's U.S. Senate seat in Virginia and even created a "Citizens For Joshua Philip Yabut" campaign logo.

"We are extremely grateful that there were no injuries as a result of this incident, and we appreciate the great work of the Virginia State Police, Richmond Police Department and other law enforcement and first responders who safely brought this situation to a close", Maj.

The suspect drove the vehicle mainly on highways and reached speeds of about 45 miles per hour.

Police reportedly tasered the man and took him into custody.
