The 53-year-old actor took to his social networking sites shortly after it was announced on Tuesday that the fashion designer had tragically been found dead in her NY apartment in what appears to have been a suicide.

"She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives", Andy Spade said in the statement, first published on The New York Times website. Her company, Kate Spade New York, has more than 140 retail shops and outlet stores across the country, as well as more than 175 stores internationally.

In a 2002 interview with Glamour, Spade expressed her desire to be remembered not only for her incredible business savvy but also for her personal attributes that went beyond the Kate Spade brand.

"She puts forth a sort of aspirational line, which I think 'Oh I want to be like that!"

Spade, 55, survived by her husband, Andy Spade, and a daughter.

Now, Reta Saffo, Spade's sister, is revealing that the designer suffered from severe depression for years, but refused to seek professional help in fear of tarnishing her "happy-go-lucky" image. "We loved each other very much and simply needed a break", he said, adding that he was "appalled" that the contents of an alleged suicide note were shared with the media.

"We worked together at a clothing store, and I was on the women's side".

Mr Spade said they remained best friends and were trying to work things out with their daughter Frances Beatrix remaining their priority.
