Allergan is recalling nearly 170,000 sample packs of birth control pills because placebo and active capsules were packaged out of order, heightening the risk of unwanted pregnancy.

"Given the nature of the issue, controls and inspections in place on the packaging line, the recall is limited to one lot of Taytulla".

The drug company Allergan voluntarily recalled 170,000 of the sample packs of the birth control pill Taytulla because women could have unintended pregnancies.

The Taytulla birth control pills being recalled were first issued August 27, 2017. The FDA's statement said that Allergan had identified the packaging mistake through a physician report.

A physician informed Allergan of the error in the first four days of a 28-count sample pack.

The lot number on the recalled batch is #5620706 with an expiration date of May 2019. "The reversing of the order may not be apparent to either new users or previous users of the product, increasing the likelihood of taking the capsules out of order", a news release said.

The maker of Taytulla birth-control treatment issued a nationwide recall in the United States on Tuesday over concerns that misplaced capsules in pill packs could cause unintended pregnancies. The total lot of recalled packs originally had been distributed to doctors across the country who can offer them to patients as samples.

Allergan said it was made aware of the error by a physician.
