The project will consist of two additional pipelines that could transport up to 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russian Federation to the European Union - it is set to cross around 375km of Finland's economic zone through the Baltic Sea.

The Nord Stream 2 project is also raising security concerns and could lead to USA sanctions, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Diplomacy Sandra Oudkirk said Thursday in Berlin.

"The US is looking for sales markets. But if the U.S. put its economic interests above the interests of others, then they should expect the same from Europe", - said the German Minister.

"We would be happy if the project did not come to pass", Oudkirk said.

A consortium of western companies and Russia's Gazprom that is due to build the controversial subsea Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany said on Tuesday it was starting preparatory work in the Greifswald bay off Germany's Baltic coast.

In the German Lubmin began the construction of a gas receiving station within the project of the pipeline "Nord stream-2". The project includes two parallel lines.

Jens Mueller, a spokesman for Nord Stream 2, dismissed concern that the new pipeline would create more dependence on Russian gas, saying it would be only one of many sources of natural gas for Western Europe.

As previously reported "FACTS", the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko warned Germany from participating in the construction of the "Nord stream-2", proposing as an alternative to the modernization of the transit pipeline passing through the territory of Ukraine.

"Does he agree that there appears to be no economic justification for this, but it is instead a political project created to increase European dependence on Russian gas and to weaken Ukraine and will he press that point on our allies, particularly Germany and Denmark?"

Altmaier has said he is optimistic that a "substantial" amount of gas will flow through Ukraine in the future.
