Israeli Intelligence Minister: Hamas Restored Calm to Gaza After Warnings From Egypt

Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit on Thursday called for an worldwide probe into "crimes" committed by Israeli occupation forces against Palestinians during a protest on the Gaza border on Monday.

Pope Francis said he was "very worried" by escalating violence in the Middle East, with Arab foreign ministers set to hold an "extraordinary" meeting yesterday to discuss the situation.

He urged the Islamic countries "to take stance against these crimes".

Palestinian protests began on March 30 for the commemoration of Land Day, when in 1976 six Palestinian citizens of Israel were killed by Israeli forces after protesting the confiscation of their land.

"We must strive for a future where Israel and Palestine thrive as states in which all are equally respected, and where civil society is able to play its constructive role", she said.

Referring to the recent violence in Gaza, the United Nations deputy chief said that it "underscores the need for action".
