The standalone music app is part of a wider revamp of YouTube Red, the streaming platform's subscription service, which will now be called YouTube Premium.

An ad-supported version will be available for free also, but it won't include premium features such as background listening, song downloads and music discovery features. This service was expected to kill Google Play Music, and it has arrived under the moniker of YouTube Music. YouTube Red was Google's attempt at turning the free video streaming service into a business, lumping together a variety of subscription-only features, whether you have need for all of those or only some.

In terms of price, YouTube Music will be available for $9.99 per month.

Although YouTube Red isn't now available in the United Kingdom, the changes mean that the service is finally on its way here, alongside a host of other European countries including Ireland, France and Germany.

Alphabet-owned YouTube will launch a new music streaming service on 22 May.

While a music streaming service is nice we're really excited for YouTube Premium. It will be expanded to some other countries in the following weeks. (A: Because why charge you $5 when they can charge you $11 for that thing you want) and of course the big question....

There's no mention of the YouTube Remix service that's been rumoured, with rumours pointing to Google transitioning all existing Google Play Music users to the service by the end of the year.

Confused? Well, essentially YouTube has made it possible for customers to opt for music only. In time, Google Play Music will be phased out, according to reports.

In a blog post, he added that the service would offer a mix of "official songs, albums, thousands of playlists and artist radio plus YouTube's tremendous catalogue of remixes, live performances, covers and music videos that you can't find anywhere else". I say that because they already told us that they would have just one music service in the future, saying that "it's critical we have one offering that meets the needs of consumers and artists". YouTube Premium isn't YouTube Music Premium, although YouTube Music Premium is included.

As you might know YouTube Red gave users access to exclusive content such as Rhett and Link's Buddy System, Mind Field and the recently launched Cobra Kai. Like YouTube Red, neither service will be available in South Africa. "You'll still be able to access all of your purchased music, uploads and playlists in Google Play Music just like always".
