Modi calls Bengal poll violence 'murder of democracy', Trinamool hits back

In Howrah district, TMC is leading in 281 gram panchayat seats, while BJP is in second position with 4 seats; in East Midnapore district, TMC is leading in 390 seats and BJP in 14.

While addressing a meeting at BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi tagged the violence as "murder of democracy". In the 20 zilla parishads, 203 of the 825 seats were uncontested, the sources said.

There is fear of violence during the counting process because of which heavy security has been deployed.

Surajit Kar Purkayastha, director general of police in West Bengal, said the administration had made adequate arrangements to pre-empt violence during polling, adding that the scale of violence witnessed on Monday was much smaller than in previous panchayat elections.

The re-polling was announced following deadly violence on Monday that killed at least 12 people and injured 43 others.

Ruling Trinamool Congress has so far won 133 seats out of 912 gram panchayat seats where polling was held in Bankura district whereas BJP has claimed 80 seats and CPI (M) 15.

Counting of votes for West bengal Panchayat Election has started in 6 districts of North Bengal, reported ANI.

"The TMC along with SEC (West Bengal State Election Commission) has murdered the democracy in the state".

According to the results available till now, the TMC is set to win all the 20 Zila Parishads with a clean sweep, with a possibility of winning more than 80 per cent of the Panchayat Samiti and Gram Panchayat samiti seats.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Centre called details on the panchayat polls violence as "sketchy" and asked the West Bengal government to send another report, an official said.
