Ramadan fasting to begin on Thursday, Saudi says

"Thus, Wednesday will be the last day of Shaaban, and Thursday will mark the start of Ramadan", Allam said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Conference of Malay Rulers had agreed that determining the start of Ramadan should be based on the rukyah and hisab methods. As of 9.30pm, the Moon-sighting committee was still in discussions.

Several committees to monitor the appearance of the new moon in Saudi provinces Satire and Kasim said that they failed after sunset to see the moon. It will commence when the new crescent moon is spotted, which will be either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Ramadan is the holiest month in the Muslim calendar, it is the month in which Prophet Mohammad started receiving revelations from God.

The end of Ramadan will take place in the middle of next month after the month-long fasting period in the Islam tradition.
