Chinese pilot lands passenger jet safely after windshield shatters at 32000 feet

Liu, who joined Sichuan Airlines after leaving the military in 2006, was able to right the plane quickly and made an emergency landing at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport at 7:46, about 45 minutes after the windshield blew out.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China said in a statement that part of the cockpit window broke as the plane was flying over Chengdu.

According to Sichuan Airlines, the co-pilot sustained scratches on the face and minor injuries on the waist; one female passenger also had minor injuries on the waist.

Captain Liu Chuanjian's heroic actions moments after a cockpit windshield blew out on Monday, almost pulling his co-pilot from the Airbus A319, has won him praise from flight professionals and internet readers for saving over 100 people onboard. "The next thing I know, my co-pilot had been sucked halfway out of the window", Captain Liu Chuanjian was quoted as saying by the Chengdu Economic Daily.

While authorities continue to investigate the accident, Sichuan Airlines noted that the flight had experienced a "mechanical failure".

The Airbus A319 of Sichuan Airlines was bound for Lhasa in Tibet from the southwestern city of Chongqing when the incident began.

Incidents involving cracked windshields do happen on a regular basis due to occurrences such as bird or lightning strikes but ones involving entire windshields coming off are rare. On May 3, another Southwest Airlines flight was forced to conduct an emergency landing after a cabin window pane cracked in mid-flight.

After landing, most passengers were transferred to another flight to Lhasa, but 29 passengers were sent to the hospital, one with a sprain and another with bruising, China Central TV reported. He says he felt the cold air and saw how the cockpit door opened. Most of the equipment malfunctioned ... and I couldn't hear the radio. Liu said that the emergency landing was extremely hard because of the noise, flying debris, and inability to see much more than a few feet ahead of the aircraft.

"The oxygen masks on the plane all dropped out".

In a separate incident in the United States same month, a mother was killed after a jet engine of Southwest airlines exploded during a flight.
