Thunderstorm, squall likely in UP in next 2 days

Almost 70 flights were diverted as flight operations to and from the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi were majorly hit on Sunday as a dust storm hit the city in the evening.

The dust storm with a wind speed reaching 109 kmph fell almost 190 trees in Delhi. By early evening, the skies had turned dark.

The flight movements at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport have been put on hold, due to the thunderstorm on Sunday.

People have been complaining of delay in Metro services and the hailstorm disrupted electric supply in parts of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has reportedly said that the Blue Line operations were being terminated as an overhead equipment cable on Blue Line was cut off after a tree fell on it during the storm.

The rains and storm brought down trees and tree branches in some areas and led to traffic snarls, forcing two-wheeler drivers to take shelter under bridges and flyovers. Motorists switched on headlights to find their way in the enveloping darkness. The sudden change in weather brought the mercury a few notches down in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram.

The India Meteorology Department has forecast thunderstorm accompanied with squall or gusty winds across the state on Sunday.

The city witnessed traffic snarls at several places and power cuts were reported in areas including Defence Colony, Munirka, Amar Colony, Greater Kailash I and Vasant Kunj.

In its latest forecast, the department has also predicted an increase in maximum temperatures by at least 3 degrees Celsius during the next 2-3 days, due to north-westerly winds prevailing over the region.
