California school shooting suspect in custody, 1 injured

The Los Angeles County Sheriff said the suspect had been detained near Highland High School in Palmdale, 40 miles (65 kilometers) north of downtown Los Angeles.

Authorities say the suspect ran off after the shooting and dumped the rifle along the way before he was caught in a shopping center.

Highland High School has about 3,000 students in Grades 9 through 12.

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the head and a 15-year-old girl shot in the wrist at Sal Castro Middle School in Los Angeles on February 1, officials said.

The boy injured was also 14, and police stated that he was taken to the hospital after being shot in the arm.

"This is ridiculous - there's too many school shootings", said parent Tracy Reed, whose son texted her about the shooting at his school.

The high school was placed on lockdown during a tense law enforcement sweep. "I mean, it's tiresome". Authorities also set up an area to receive anxious parents who were rushing to the school to pick up their children.

The shift of the school resource deputy assigned to the school doesn't begin until 8 a.m. and the officer was on the way to work when the shooting happened, the sheriff said. "I heard a whole bunch going off". "There was no threat to that campus whatsoever", a sheriff's official said in a press conference.
