President Donald Trump continued his interest in OH politics the day after the primary election when he endorsed Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine in the governor's race. When news broke Tuesday night of Cordray winning the nomination, the Democratic Governor's Association said they were confident they could flip the seat blue in November.

"His Socialist opponent in November should not do well, a big failure in last job!" Cordray won over 60 percent of the vote.

Cordray is also DeWine's predecessor, having served as Ohio's attorney general before heading the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for almost six years.

Democrats see opportunity in the seat being vacated by Kasich, a two-term governor and 2016 presidential contender, while Republicans hope to hold the office.

Political newcomer Rick Neal, a former worldwide relief worker backed by Brown, won the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Stivers.

"We are in this era where everyone is talking about outside candidates and insurgent ideologues on both sides, and yet in OH, broadly in the primary and specifically in the two governor races, the familiar formula paid dividends at the top of the ticket", he said.

This fall, Cordray will face the victor of the Republican primary, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine. Ultimately, 147,303 more Republicans than Democrats showed up to cast primary ballots for governor. "The negative primary on the Republican side has really cost them".

"When I entered this race, I knew that I would not have equal resources", Taylor said, citing DeWine's extensive political career in Ohio. Kucinich has at various times praised President Donald Trump and stoked the "deep state" conspiracy theories about the president being wire-tapped by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He said he would return the money.

DeWine's victory over Kasich's lieutenant governor, Mary Taylor, followed a bitter and expensive campaign in which Taylor likened DeWine's record to that of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and questioned his loyalty to President Donald Trump.

Cordray, a former consumer watchdog appointed by Obama, won the Democratic nomination after an unusually tough fight by former U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who ran to his left on an anti-gun, pro-environment platform.

Republican voters Tuesday are also choosing a Republican nominee to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. State Sen. Joe Schiavoni scored nine percent of the vote and former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Bill O'Neill absorbed three percent.

Elections chief Jon Husted (HYOO'-sted) says absentee voting is up from the same time four years ago.
