President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will hold the first-ever U.S.

"They can ensure both the President's and Kim Jong-un's security, as well as provide neutrality", he added.

"We welcomed them back home the proper way", Trump told SFlbsupporters at a campaign rally in IN on Thursday evening.

The Kim family that has ruled North Korea since it was founded in 1948 has long sought a meeting with a sitting US president, and many observers have argued that Trump's agreement to hold the summit represented a victory in itself for Pyongyang.

Mr Trump thanked Mr Kim for releasing the Americans and said he believes the North Korean leader wants to reach an agreement on denuclearisation at their upcoming summit. The men were taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for evaluation before being reunited with their families.

"The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th", Trump tweeted.

Though he did break with tradition to move the USA embassy to Jerusalem, the White House plan bogged down and the divide between Israelis and Palestinians seems as intractable as ever, prompting Trump's attention shift to North Korea.

"So the relationship is good, and hopefully, for all of us, for the world, hopefully something very good is going to happen".

U.S. officials said the release of Americans Kim Hak-song, Tony Kim and Kim Dong-chul removed a major obstacle to the summit, providing Trump with some tangible evidence that his twin-track policy of engagement and "maximum pressure" was working.

Pence said Thursday on NBC News, "In this moment the regime in North Korea has been dealing, as far as we can see, in good faith".

"We hope this meeting will advance prospects for peace in the Korean Peninsula", Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has made clear the US team won't accede to a phased lifting of the global sanctions that they believe forced Kim to the table.

Daniel Russel, until recently the most senior USA diplomat for Asia, said the prisoner release would reduce tensions, but was not a sign that peace was at hand.

"Understanding the conditions many North Koreans live under, I felt guilty having all of that", she said, adding that the United States calls on Pyongyang to improve conditions for its citizens.

The meeting comes following a period of sabre-rattling between the two leaders that has developed into apparent better relations between both, as well as South Korea.

North Korea embodied the earliest-and arguably the only ongoing-front in the Cold War. "I said, 'Welcome home.' He said, 'God bless America, '" Hook said.

He made at least seven trips to North Korea to teach.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said that while there was "reason for some optimism" about the summit, the U.S. troop presence in South Korea would not be part of initial negotiations.

Now, however, Trump enters a month-long period where he must set expectations for what he'll really be able to achieve.

Abe congratulated their release as Pyongyang's forward-looking step ahead of its summit with the USA, but stressed that many Japanese are still stuck in North Korea.
