High marks for City Honors on annual list of top high schools

U.S. News and World Report recognized St. Charles North for its 99 percent graduation rate, 45 percent math proficiency in which students meet or exceed state standards and 50 percent student reading proficiency.

A total of 104 bronze medals were awarded in Iowa based on graduation rates and how the schools performed on state assessments. The school's top rating came in 2012 when it was ranked 23 in the nation.

Twenty three of America's top 500 public high schools are in New Jersey, including five that rank among the top 100, according to a new ranking.

Gold and silver medals are awarded to schools that are most successfully preparing students for college, based on students who pass Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests.

PMSA's student body is 47 percent low-income, 94 percent minority, 39 percent male and 61 percent female. Four other county schools gained silver medals. "Congratulations and thank you for your hard work!"

Only two percent of the nation's high schools earn gold medal status, with 11 percent - including Ocean Springs - gaining silver medal recognition. Another difference is that charter schools generally have limited enrollment and accept students via an application process.

The magnet school was ranked 8 out of 670 public high schools in IL and 261 out of 20,548 public high schools in the country that U.S. News reviewed - good enough for a Gold medal.
