Hundreds of Palestinians also set fire to the Palestinian side of the Kerem Shalom crossing between the Gaza Strip and Israel, damaging fuel and gas pipes that serve Gaza, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit said.

The Hamas-run Health Ministry identified the two as 23-year-old Bahaa Abdel Rahman al-Qudeih and 20-year-old Muhammad Khalid Abu Raida.

It says it only opens fire when necessary to stop infiltrations, attacks and attempts to damage the fence.

Correspondents say explosions in Gaza in the past have been caused by Israeli air strikes, by feuding between Palestinian factions or by the mishandling of explosives by militant groups.

Reuters television captured a pillar of smoke rising above the village of Zawayda near the coast of Gaza, far from the border with Israel where tensions have escalated in recent weeks.

The rallies are part of a six-week protest that will culminate on May 15 to mark what Palestinians refer to as the Nakba, or "catastrophe" - a reference to Israel's establishment in 1948 and when 750,000 Arabs were removed from Palestine.

On May 14, the United States is to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, whose Israeli-annexed eastern sector is sought for a Palestinian capital. The Israeli regime has faced worldwide criticism over its use of live fire.

It accuses Hamas of seeking to use the protests as cover to carry out violence.

In addition to those killed and wounded in the context of the protests, 10 Palestinians were killed since March 30 in other border incidents.

Israel withdrew its troops and settlers from Gaza in 2005. Eighty-three people were wounded by live ammunition from Israeli troops.

The blast took place in Deir al-Balah, a city located in the central Gaza Strip, the ministry added.

Hamas later said the six, including two commanders, were killed "dismantling booby-trapped spying equipment planted by Israel during the past decade in Gaza".
