These two countries alone were responsible for over half of the total global pollution-related deaths.

Since 2000 San Diego has seen a 61 percent reduction in unhealthy ozone days, and since 2004 a 94 percent drop in unhealthy particle days.

Suspended particles in the Air is the largest contributor to Air pollution and greatest risk.

New research has found that 95% of world's population is exposed to unsafe air on a daily basis. The WHO sets guidelines for how many micrograms of fine particulate matter should be found in a cubic meter of air.

But the association and other clean-air advocacy groups worry that under the Trump Administration - which has been loosening regulations on industry and has already repealed certain Obama-era waterway protections - the clean air movement may suffer setbacks.

Ken Fletcher is the director of advocacy for the American Lung Association in Ohio.

The study was published last week by the Journal of the American Heart Association.

However, the report also said that levels of "dirty" air pollution are decreasing in the United States, as tailpipes and smokestacks produce cleaner exhaust. The report said the spikes in particle pollution are likely to increase because of climate change and high emissions from wood-burning devices.

Chautauqua and Erie counties both received an "F" grade for high ozone days from 2014 to 2016. Increased heat often means increased ozone.

Ozone, also known as smog, is the most prevalent air pollutant.

Los Angeles topped the list again for the most unhealthy air days in the nation. And the poor grades in La Plata County, Colorado reflect that. But the lung association says the city still met the national standard and was tied as the No. 66 most polluted metro area in the U.S.

Meanwhile, the Southwest continues to fill most of the remaining slots.

The report found the Salt Lake City region experienced more days of elevated levels of ozone from 2014 to 2016 than from 2013 to 2015. Yet Siler said many Utahns fail to take steps to reduce their emissions - such as turning off the auto while waiting to pick up their kids.

The EPA even backed off collecting data from the oil and gas industry about the location and size of their facilities. The cities on the list were Bellingham, Washington; Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont; Casper, Wyoming; Honolulu, Hawaii; Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, Florida; and Wilmington, North Carolina. As a result, local air pollution has stabilized and the economy and communities have continued to thrive.

By the metric of year-round particle pollution, DE falls squarely into the #12 spot for level of pollution, according to the report. Nassau County was not assessed because there are no air quality monitors within its borders.
