The charges came in the wake of an alleged domestic violence incident in which the 24-year-old National Football League player attacked his 28-year-old girlfriend on February 11 during an argument in their Los Gatos home.

The 28-year-old woman told responding officers that Foster dragged her by her hair, physically threw her out of the house, and punched her in the head eight to 10 times.

Prosecutors said Foster was charged with three felonies - domestic violence with an allegation that he inflected great bodily injury, forcefully preventing a victim from reporting a crime and illegal possession of an assault weapon.

If convicted on all charges, He faces up to 11 years in prison.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster won't participate in the offseason program while he tends to legal matters related to his domestic violence charges. He is scheduled to meet with the team this week, a sitdown that could determine his future with the franchise.

Linebacker Reuben Foster will not face the misdemeanor charge for possession of a large-capacity ammunition magazine due to a federal injunction. If convicted of all charges, Foster could go to prison for almost a decade.

The DA's office said Friday it is prepared to prosecute Foster even if the reported victim ends up not testifying, an issue that stymied previous domestic-violence cases against players.

The informal ban from offseason workouts at the facility does not preclude the 49ers from assisting Foster off the field, and that includes support from Lynch, front-office advisor Keena Turner and player engagement director Austin Moss. A blanket statement from the team described Thursday's charges as "disturbing" and that Foster "is aware that his place in our organization is under great scrutiny".

Foster's attack left his girlfriend bruised and ruptured one of her eardrums, prosecutors said.

When fullback Bruce Miller was in the midst of legal woes stemming from a domestic incident in 2015, he stayed away from the offseason program; Miller was released prior to the 2016 season after a different arrest for assault. "We will continue to follow this serious matter", the statement read.

Klippen issued a no-contact order between Foster and the alleged victim and granted a delay in the plea hearing until 11 a.m. CDT April 30.

The NFL team announced on Sunday night that the former Alabama All-American would not take part in the offseason program - at least not until Foster's legal troubles are resolved.
