National Weather Service confirms EF2 tornado in Lynchburg

Shortly after 5 p.m Sunday, a tornado touched down near Greensboro, N.C., according to a statement from the National Weather Service.

Tornado warnings were issued for Summit, Stark and Portage counties until 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

First responders were working to assist those in Craig County, Lynchburg and other localities impacted by possible tornado damage, according to Jeff Stern of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

But the National Weather Service advised people to use caution.

Early Monday, winds will get up to 25 miles per hour.

Gov. Roy Cooper said there were 33,465 Duke Energy customers without power Monday afternoon, and of those, 21,000 were in Guilford County. Several trees along the path were uprooted and snapped.

Utility workers are heading to a North Carolina city to begin efforts to restore power one day after a tornado brought significant damage.

The last tornado to strike Amherst was on July 9, 1990.

Despite the March and April storms, the central Sierra snowpack was at just 47 of average as of Thursday, the California Department of Water Resources reported. NWS official tornado records go back to 1950.

The storms also killed a one-year-old girl when a tree fell on a recreational vehicle where she was sleeping, the sheriff's office in Bossier Parish, Louisiana, said.

"Fortunately, there were no injuries", Elmore said.

Guilford County schools were closed Monday because of damage.

"It was very unnerving to be in a vehicle out in the storm", Turner said.

The weather warnings are ongoing and will be updated.

Two tornadoes remained in Ashley County.

Rainfall was heaviest northwest of Richmond, which is causing the James River to rise.

According to a post-survey report issued by the weather service, two dogs in that neighborhood were "either displaced or lofted over 100 yards when their respective pens were destroyed".
