If you do want to courageous the lines, you can download form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. The IRS encourages taxpayers to file by the deadline even if they can't afford the full balance to minimize penalties. It said the payment service, IRS Direct Pay, was experiencing both an unplanned and planned outage.

In a statement, the IRS confirmed that the problems are ongoing.

As the filing deadline on Tax Day approached, the Internal Revenue Service page that allows users to pay taxes directly from their bank accounts crashed.

The service that taxpayers use to file online is partly down, according to Acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter.

"Note that your tax payment is due although IRS Direct Pay may not be available", the page notes. Filing an extension using TurboTax, for instance, takes roughly five minutes and simply involves estimating how much you'll owe when you do finally get around to finishing your return.

Trump's top economic adviser Larry Kudlow offered a deadpan reaction when asked about the failure.

Trump needs more time for tax returns. "Sounds terrible. Really bad", he said during a briefing with reporters in West Palm Beach, Florida.

"This is game-day for the IRS, and it seems the IRS can't get out of the locker room", said Rep. Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.). "Americans should not be punished for being unable to file their tax returns or pay their tax bills today", said Wyden, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, which oversees the IRS.

"On my way over here this morning, I was told that a number of IRS systems are unavailable at the moment", Kautter said at a Congressional hearing Tuesday morning. Kautter said he did not yet know how many people would be affected, but he said "it could be millions, potentially".
