7 killed, 17 treated after 'mass casualty incident' at SC prison

Corrections Director Bryan Stirling said cellphones helped stir up trouble Sunday night at the Lee Correctional Institute in Bishopville. "The burden of this lies at the feet of the warden and the state of SC".

An inmate at the scene told AP that correctional officers did not attempt to halt the inmate-on-inmate violence as bodies "literally stacked on top of each other".

Though most of the autopsies have yet to be performed, it appears that numerous prisoners died from stabbing or slashing wounds from "shanks", Lee County Coroner Larry Logan said. He said it appeared most of the deaths were a result of stabbing or slashing. "They don't have guns", Logan said.

"How else are you going to die in prison?"

In March, inmates at the prison held an officer hostage after taking control of a dorm room, The State reported.

Authorities responded to an "ongoing incident" at Lee Correctional Facility in Bishopville, S.C.

As of April 16 at midnight, the SCDC website accounts for 1,266 inmates at Lee Correctional Institution.

In February, an inmate was killed by another inmate in a fight.
