Woolworths shuts doors across the country due to IT outage

Signs were put up at a number of Woolworths stores apologising for the problem.

"They've told everyone just to leave their food and leave the store". Many have left full trolleys behind.

Stores temporarily closed in response to the outage.

Customers were asked to leave many stores after the registers failed to function.

"It was really frustrating". At Haymarket in Sydney, customers were told to return in "an hour", according to one tweet for ABC journalist Michael Janda.

Shoppers were this afternoon briefly unable to make purchases at Woolworths supermarkets after its point-of-sale system was rendered unusable.

It's the busiest time of the day for Woolworths, but stores around the country shut their doors on Monday afternoon after a nationwide technical issue completely halted sales.

Shortly after 4pm, the issue began affecting all registers across the country.
