Though he'd already been acting for a few years, Marine Corps veteran R Lee Ermey made an indelible impact on the cinematic world thanks to his portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket. Rogin said the actor died on Sunday. Born March 24, 1944, in Emporia, Kansas, Ermey was a drill instructor in the Marines and also a staff sergeant.

His first film role occurred when he was studying in the Philippines, and he played a First Air Cavalry chopper pilot in Apocalypse Now, also serving as a technical adviser to Francis Ford Coppola.

The news was announced by Ermey's manager Bill Rogin via Ermey's official Twitter account.

"He will be greatly missed by all of us", his longtime manager, Bill Rogin, said in a statement.

Full Metal star R. Lee Ermy has died aged 74 from complications of pneumonia.

Ermey was best known for his role in "Full Metal Jacket". Although he was initially hired as an advisor, Kubrick was so impressed with a tape that he had recorded Ermelo himself that included him in cast. It's reportedly one of the only performances Kubrick ever allowed to be improvised.

Full Metal Jacket led to a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and helped put him on the radar. "You see, in the course of hiring the marine recruits, we interviewed hundreds of guys", Kubrick told Rolling Stone in 1987. "They're driving us into bankruptcy so that they can impose socialism on us, and that's exactly what they're doing, and I'm sick and damn exhausted of it and I know you are too". "Lee came up with, I don't know, 150 pages of insults".

Mr. Ermey's other notable roles include turns in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Se7en", as well as the voice of Sarge, the leader of the plastic army men of "Toy Story".

In addition to a long list of contributions to theatrical movies, Ermey also hosted two popular television shows on The History Channel "Mail Call" and "Lock n' Load", along with "Gunny Time" on the Outdoor Channel.
