More Than 200 Million Eggs Recalled on East Coast Over Salmonella Fears

CNN reported the eggs were sold to retail stores and restaurants in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

According to the FDA, 22 illnesses have been reported so far.

Last month, the FDA said that it had learnt about a cluster of salmonella outbreaks in multiple states, and investigators worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state authorities to trace the source of the illness.

The egg cartons affected by the recall should be labeled with the plant number P-1065, with packing dates ranging from 011 through 102.

Both Walmart and Food Lion stores were recipients of the eggs packaged as their store brands, along with a score of other packaging examples. The farm has 3 million laying hens with a USDA inspector on-site daily, the agency said.

According to Mayo Clinic, the possible signs and symptoms of salmonella infection include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal cramps, blood in the stool and headaches. In rare situations, Salmonella Braenderup infections can cause the organism to enter the bloodstream and produce severe illnesses, such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

"The eggs that are in the stores today are safe", she said by phone. It is generally contracted from contaminated poultry, meat, eggs and water, and affects the intestinal tract.

"The Hyde County farm has never before experienced a recall or serious safety violation", Rose Acre Farms said in an email.
