Reliance Jio in talks with Qualcomm to launch laptops with cellular connectivity

After amassing a whopping 175 million user base in India, Jio is gearing up to cast an indelible impact in the mobile data space.

According to ETTelecom, Reliance Jio is in talks with Qualcomm to bring these cellular Windows 10 notebooks to India. "They could take the device and bundle it with data and content", Miguel Nunes, senior director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, told ET.

The new development follows the launch of the Airtel Rs. 499 pack that brought 2GB of daily data for 82 days. Arguably, no company could possibly agree to that as much as Reliance who has been engrossed deeply in the oil business since ages, and now it is unshakeable in the mobile data market. With always connected PCs, Reliance Jio stands to expand its service and increase its average revenue per user, which is already the highest among its peers. The budget 4G laptop will come bundled with a Jio data pack.

The regulator has also said that telecom operators will have to provide services to all subscribers availing the same tariff plan in a non-discriminatory manner. With JioPhone, Reliance Jio wants those people to get on to the 4G bandwagon who can not afford buying even the entry-level smartphones. This kind of connection will be more secure than the conventional hotspot connections.

As per Counterpoint data, close to five million laptops are sold every year in India with majority connecting to either enterprise or home or public WiFi spots. In the light of this news, Reliance seems adamant to embed Jio in each and every device that is capable of running the internet.
