Australia's Pearson, the 100 metres hurdles world champion, said she was "disappointed" but added that she needed to give herself the best chance of competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. I left no stone unturned to run in the 100m hurdles and the 4x100m relay.

Pearson has had plenty of highs and lows after bursting onto the worldwide stage with a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

The poster girl of the 2018 Commonwealth Games - Sally Pearson - is forced to withdraw from the competition due to an Achilles injury.

"Not being able to go out on that track and run for Australia is gut-wrenching", she said.

Pearson played a major role in last night's opening ceremony after taking part in the final stages of the Queen's baton relay. That's why I waited until today. In 2015 she tore her calf during a race at the Rome Diamond League which caused her to crash to the track and shatter her wrist.

Women to compete at Augusta National in amateur event starting in 2019
The tournament will begin with a field of 72 players. "To add women to that great amateur tradition is just a great idea". Ridley did not provide specifics but said LPGA Tour Commissioner Michael Whan was on board with the event.

"That roar was incredible - it was the spine tingly, goose-bumpy moment that everyone wants to feel", she said of the moment her name was announced in Carrara Stadium.

"It's just unfortunate the timing is now", Pearson told a news conference Thursday, explaining why she delayed her announcement. "It's really hard to look any more than the next month or two ahead at this point".

The 31-year-old has been battling the nagging Achilles tendon complaint that threatened her participation in the Games on her native Gold Coast.

"Gutted, tears flowing, a lot of emotions, you could call it grief", Pearson said of her reaction after failing to finish a training session and coming to the realization that she'd be watching her home games from the sidelines.
