Volkov was consistently able to fight off Werdum's takedowns, and gain the upper hand. Werdum shot in for another lazy takedown that was easily stuffed, and Volkov was wise to Werdum's attempts to sweep him to his back. It is not there but he transitions to the back of Volkov and then drops down for an armbar. Werdum's last fight was unanimous decision win over Marcin Tybura, and he looked to push his win streak to three with a win tonight. At just 29 years old and now with a win over the 40-year-old Werdum under his belt, there's undoubtedly a new contender to get excited about in a UFC heavyweight division that has been lacking star power as Miocic has torn through everyone put in front of him. Fabricio Werdum takes on Alexander Volkov in the main event, while hometown boy, Jimi Manuwa takes on Jan Blachowicz in the co-main event. From there, "Vai Cavalo" worked from the top position for a couple of minutes, until Volkov got back to his feet. Werdum went on the offensive, but exhausted, there was little behind his punches. Werdum postures up and lands some more, he can't pass and opts to go back into guard. Volkov puts together a hard combination and knocks Werdum out. Werdum now presses Volkov against the cage but he shrugs him off. Werdum attempted a submission as the round expired but to no avail.

Werdum opened with his now-patented jumping side kick, which Volkov welcomed with a smile. Normally that would be the end against Werdum, but Volkov found a way to slip out of it and avoid damage. Werdum seemed to have slowed considerably, and wound up with a cut under the eye. Volkov drops Werdum with a punch and this one is all over! WOW!
