Korea's Moon took the lead in N. Korea nuclear diplomacy

It would be the first meeting of a sitting USA president and a leader of North Korea. Such a move could wind up harming US interests more than continued stalemate.

The diplomatic wheels started turning rapidly at the beginning of the year when the two Koreas worked to bring a handful of athletes from the North to compete in the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

If the talks should indeed come to pass, President Trump should deliver a clear message to Kim Jong-un: Further proliferation of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile technologies will not be tolerated and attacks on any of North Korea's neighbors or the United States will be met by overwhelming force and an end to the Kim regime.

Talks "will focus on Sweden's consular responsibilities as a protecting power for the United States, Canada and Australia", the ministry said in a statement, but they also will address the security situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Moon now has his wish granted as he prepares for a meeting in late April with Kim and basks in the worldwide glow of having engineered another upcoming summit-previously thought wildly unlikely-between the American and North Korean leaders.

The surprise announcement that Trump had accepted the invitation from Pyongyang to hold the first-ever summit between the leaders of the United States and North Korea stunned everyone from war hawks to peace advocates.

The reactor could be used to produce weapons-grade plutonium, but North Korea is believed to already have enough fissile material for multiple nuclear bombs, according to Mr Joshua Pollack, a senior research associate at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, in California.

Mr Im added that Mr Moon may meet Mr Trump after the inter-Korean summit, but before Mr Trump's planned summit with Mr Kim in May.

Kim has also pledged to suspend missile and nuclear activities during the period of dialogue with Washington, according to the South Korean government.

North Korea's state media has yet to comment on the pending summits with Moon and Trump, but Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho is visiting Sweden for talks with his Swedish counterpart Margot Wallstrom. So Moon was forced to go more hard-line than he probably wanted and to join Trump's sanctions and pressure campaign against Pyongyang. "We'll see what happens next", Wallstrom told reporters after the talks concluded.

Chinese State Councillor Yang Jiechi is also due to visit South Korea this month to discuss North Korea-related matters.

Officials in Tokyo would not confirm Wednesday the reports of a potential shift in Japan's policy, but government spokesman Yoshihide Suga also declined to explicitly deny a summit was being explored.

South Korea's top diplomat said Thursday that it is important to maintain close coordination with the United States to discuss details of their summit plans with North Korea.
