'Theory of Everything' Kiwi screenwriter's lasting image of Hawking

Stephen Hawking, the famed physicist who died Wednesday at 76, had a publicly strained relationship with Israel.

'He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world. They will miss him forever.

His 1988 book "A Brief History of Time" became an worldwide bestseller and brought him widespread fame.

"The Nobel is given only for theoretical work that has been confirmed by observation".

"It was obvious he completely understood everything because he asked the most relevant and interesting question in response to what I had described and I was very taken by that", said Richard Ford, the director of program development at SNOLAB who had been a graduate student at the time of Hawking's 1998 visit.

Prof Hawking's father was a doctor of tropical medicine and wanted his son to follow him into the profession - but he wanted to be a mathematician so natural sciences was an agreed compromise.

In the early 1970s, when the British-born Hawking had already done essential work on the cosmic gravitational fields known as black holes, he got into a disagreement with Jacob Bekenstein, then a doctoral student at Princeton.

The Honorary Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts, member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, receiver of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, was ranked in 2002 by the BBC's poll of the Greatest Britons, as number 25. He went on to live an eventful life till 76, authoring a best-seller A Brief History of Time that sold more than 10 million copies, inspiring a biopic, The Theory of Everything, that was nominated for several Oscars, appearing on several TV shows, and celebrating his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon. For Hawking, the models of cosmology that were set in stone had to be dismantled to reveal the origin of the universe. A university source told AFP that his health deteriorated around Christmas time.

After years of traveling so they could both make advances in their careers, the couple returned to Cambridge in 1975. Hawking had three assistants but issued all directions himself.

Hawking shone a spotlight on the work of another Canadian research project when he featured the SNOLAB neutrino observatory in Sudbury, Ont., in his 2011 documentary mini-series, "Brave New World with Stephen Hawking".

As his death was threatening to come, hoping humanity started looking at those stars he talked about, some decided to make a tribute commemorating the scientist's beliefs.

Meanwhile, he was also cruising through the universe where no spaceship has dared to go.
