The Latham store will close by the end of the month and has launched a closing sale, an employee at the store said.

In January, Toys "R" Us announced that it would close 20 percent of its USA stores, or 180 locations (including multiple stores in Michigan), within months. And to my discovery, the shelves were stocked with new toys that I have been waiting to get my hands on. Company executives have said those stores would begin liquidating inventory in February and be closed by mid-April.

Toys "R" Us in Wilmington was not able to comment on if or when their store would close, and the manager referred WECT to contact their corporate media relations.

Nothing is finalized regarding the liquidation just yet, but it seems like a dire enough situation that you may want to take a nostalgic stroll with your kids through the Toys "R" Us stores of your childhood before they're all gone.

Toys "R" Us reigned supreme in the 1980s and early 1990s, when it was one of the first of the "category killers" - a store totally devoted to one thing: toys.

The rumors of liquidation are still unconfirmed but anonymous sources have given confirmation to several news organizations like USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal. The chain has struggled to compete on price against giants like Amazon, Target and Walmart, which sell toys, but small Bay Area toy stores have also held their own by offering carefully curated selections and staff expertise. Toys R Us accounted for about 10% of the companies' sales. In a tweet last week, Toys R' Us said they've seen an fantastic outpouring of love and they are still open for business.
