SP leading in Yogi's seat, media barred from counting centre

Counting is on for the Phulpur and Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

In the Phulpur Lok Sabha seat, Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel is leading by 12,231 votes with 99,557 votes, and BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel follows second with 87,326 votes. At the same time in Phulpur Lok Sabha seat, BJP candidate Kaushlendra Singh Patel is also trailing in second place having received 47,631 votes.

Samajwadi Party candidate Pravin Nishad has taken a lead of 9,466 votes after 7 rounds in Gorakhpur.

The announcement by the Mayawati led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to support Samajwadi Party's candidate has made these bypolls very interesting as the results of these polls will decide on future alliance of the arch-rivals.

The top Gorakhpur official said misinformation could be generated if the media reports unscrutinised counting figures.

Counting of votes for the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha bypolls will be held on Wednesday amid tight security arrangements.

The Bharatiya Janata Party seems to be facing an unexpected setback in Uttar Pradesh with both Lok Sabha seats seeing leads for the opposition. Prior to Adityanath, the seat was thrice represented in Parliament by his mentor, Yogi Avaidyanath.

On the other hand, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav had said it (polling day) was a day to "change and re-write history".

Phulpur, once represented by the country's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, witnessed a saffron surge in the 2014 Lok Sabha election when Maurya won the seat.
