QB Case Keenum plans to sign with Broncos

Since Peyton Manning's retirement in 2016, the Broncos have featured a revolving door of starting quarterbacks acquired via free agency, a trade and the draft, and none of them has excelled.

Quarterback Case Keenum, who guided the Minnesota Vikings to the brink of the Super Bowl last season, is expected to sign with the Broncos when free agency opens Wednesday, according to several reports. They are without a quarterback, which means they better land Kirk Cousins.

He also threw a touchdown on the last play of the game to Stefon Diggs to stun the New Orleans Saints in the divisional round of the playoffs.

The Vikings reportedly are one of the finalists for Cousins, along with the Jets and Cardinals.

. The Vikings went 11-3 in his regular-season starts in place of an injured Sam Bradford.

The 30-year-old Keenum has had stints with the Texans, Rams and Vikings, who reached the NFC Championship Game last season.

The Broncos, who own the fifth pick in next month's National Football League draft, also considered Cousins following a 5-11 season in which Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch all struggled behind a porous offensive line and questionable play-calling before Mike McCoy was replaced by Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator.

He played for coaches Vance Joseph and Gary Kubiak in Houston at the beginning of his career (2012-13) and already has a feel for the staff and offensive system. I'll take that a step further: Since Sammy Watkins and Allen Robinson are both off the board, Elway can also invest in the front five. That's why they rushed him back against the Bears despite Keenum's good play last season. This figure and the term of the contract - unlike with Cousins - should not preclude the Broncos from drafting a quarterback fifth overall if they choose to go in that direction.
