The new "millennial" rail card for people aged between 26 and 30, taking a third off "most rail fares across Britain", was announced a year ago before trialling in East Anglia in December, and now a larger "trial" is beginning tomorrow (Tues 13 March).

Demand for the railcard has been high since it went on sale on Tuesday morning, with the official website crashing under the strain.

From today, 10,000 26-30 Railcards have been made available at www.26-30railcard.co.uk or over the phone on 0844 871 4036 for £30.

Due to high demand "access to buy is limited", the website said.

But only 10,000 will be released, meaning around one in 500 people in the age range will have one.

So, that has prompted quite a flurry this morning, with National Railcards Twitter saying "the whole team" was working at getting the website back on track.

Others compared getting their hands on a railcard, to the elusive Golden Tickets in Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Tom Drury, from London, wrote: "The launch of the new railcard is a shambles".

The railcard will only be available for one year, costs £30 for a year and will only be available digitally.

The trial of the 26-30 railcard is part of the rail industry's long-term plan to change, improve and boost communities by enabling more people to travel by train.

Currently, people aged 16-25 can buy a railcard to get a third off their fares, as well as couples in a Two Together scheme, or families in a group card.

"Railcards are still available to purchase and people should keep checking @Railcard Twitter and Facebook pages for updates".

If you're one of the lucky ones to get one of the first 10,000 cards you need to be armed with some information to process your application.

Between 04:30 and 10:00 Monday to Friday, a £12 minimum fare will apply.

The chaos surrounding the railcard's launch will see many disappointed, particularly those at the upper end of the age bracket for whom this was the last chance to enjoy discounted travel until they hit 60 and qualify for a Senior Railcard.

If your phone runs out of battery or gets lost, the Railcard can be transferred to another mobile device.
