Four BJP, one Cong candidate file nominations for RS

While Farooq filed his nomination papers before Assembly Secretary S Murthy, who is also the returning officer on Friday, he filed another set of nomination papers today. RJD would field two candidates in Rajya Sabha election, scheduled to be held on March 23, he added.

Monday was the last day for filing of nominations and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 15.

There is a likelihood of 28 votes of the BJP which would be left after the division of votes amongst its eight candidates, being transferred to Agarwal.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will contest from Uttar Pradesh and Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad from Bihar.

On the other hand, Congress president Rahul Gandhi approved a list of ten candidates, which include only fresh faces as all out going members, barring senior leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, have been denied re-nominations.

Former Rajya Sabha member Dhiraj Prasad Sahu was nominated as Congress candidate from Jharkhand.

The BJP, which has a 45-member strength in the State Assembly, can easily win one Rajya Sabha seat and the party plans to spring a surprise by fielding a party worker. The three candidates are L Hanumanthaiah, Naseer Hussain and G.C Chandrashekar - a Dalit, A Muslim, and a Vokkaligga (a dominant OBC community), respectively.

The RJD has fielded two candidates - its national spokesman Manoj Jha and Ashfaq Karim, who runs a medical college in Katihar district of the state.

The TMC has already its four candidats and its leader Mamta Banerjee has openly said her party would support Singhvi in the Rajya Sabha polls.

Congress also seems to be leaving nothing to chance after it faced one of the toughest Rajya Sabha elections in August previous year when senior leader Ahmed Patel won by a narrow margin. However, the fight will be between the third candidate of the Congress and JDS's Farooq. The Sena whose strength in the assembly is 63 has 21extra votes after it gets elected its one candidate.

His name was proposed by 40 MLAs - 20 each from the Congress and the TMC.
