Case Keenum reportedly plans to sign with the Broncos

The move comes after Case Keenum, last year's starter at quarterback, reached a deal to sign with Denver; he will do that Wednesday, the first official day of free agency.

The news is expected to be confirmed later on Tuesday and rubber stamped when Free Agency opens at 9pm (GMT) on Wednesday.

Keenum helped power the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game last season as Minnesota went 11-3 in his regular-season starts in place of an injured Sam Bradford. He went 11-3 with 3,547 yards passing, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Despite his numbers in college, his height (6-1) and the fact that he played in a wide-open spread offense led to him being an undrafted free agent.

With a sparkling new stadium, stacked roster and head coaching stability, the Vikings jumped to the head of the line of potential suitors for Cousins.

It didn't look like Keenum would become much more than a journeyman backup after stints with the St. Louis Rams, back to Houston, then to the Los Angeles Rams, before landing in Minnesota last season.

For Keenum, he will now face a pile of expectations in a quarterback-crazed region that saw its team win a Super Bowl just two seasons ago.

At the National Football League scouting combine this month, Elway said, "we'll continue to look at all of the options out there when it comes to quarterback".

It is not certain yet what sort of contract that Keenum, who made $2 million last season, will get.

Elway had said early in the offseason, "For us to have a chance to get better, we have to get better at that position".

"I still think we're not too far away, " Elway said. "But I feel like we can get right back in the thick of things pretty quickly".
