YouTube Goes Dark on Mobile Devices

YouTube says Dark theme was one of the "top requested features on mobile".

YouTube is finally giving its mobile app a dark theme, almost a year after the Google subsidiary introduced the night-friendly mode on desktop.

Youtube is going dark on iOS and Android with a new update.

YouTube has announced today its iOS and Android apps are finally getting access to a "Dark Theme", which has been available on its desktop version of the site (but hard to find). The company did not set a firm date for Android devices to get the new dark theme.

Apart from making it easier on the eyes in a dimly-lit setting, a dark mode can help you to better focus on content and potentially save a bit of battery life.

Our first hint of serious work towards a dark mode for YouTube landed last fall, when we saw signs of a dark theme for the app's video-playback panel. The app will automatically switch to a darker hue, with no app restart necessary for the change to go into effect. It certainly is weird that iOS is getting the dark theme before Android, given that YouTube and Android are both developed by Google.

With the update, YouTube joins a growing list of apps that feature a dark mode.
