Actors Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth II, and Matt Smith who plays Philip Duke of Edinburgh, attend the premiere of "The Crown" Season 2 in London, Britain, November 21, 2017.

British actress Claire Foy, who starred as a young Queen Elizabeth in the critically acclaimed Netflix series "The Crown", was paid less than her co-star, Matt Smith, according to the television show's producers.

The producers said they've fixed it going into the future, and from now on no one will earn more than the actress playing the queen.

The gender wage gap has been a trending topic of conversation in entertainment circles dating back to the Sony hacks, when it was revealed that Jennifer Lawrence was paid significantly less than her American Hustle male co-stars; the roiling #MeToo revolution and Time's Up initiative have put it squarely back into the spotlight over the past year.

Speaking during a panel about the series at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem, they said that the difference in salary was apparently due to Smith's Doctor Who fame.

For the next two seasons, all the roles will be recast with older actors.

That's good news for "Broadchurch" star Olivia Colman, who will take the reins from Foy as the show continues. A replacement for Smith's role as Prince Philip has not been announced yet.

Last year, Variety reported that, compared to Foy, more established female television stars like _Elizabeth Moss of The Handmaid's Tale-who earned seven Emmy nominations during her Mad Men run-commanded a reported $200,000 per episode.
