Driver was killed when bus crashed into ravine

A bus carrying Texas high school band members home from Disney World plunged into a ravine before dawn Tuesday in Alabama, killing one person and injuring many others.

Baldwin County authorities tell FOX10 News the bus fell off westbound I-10 into a ravine at Cowpen Creek around 5:30 a.m. Sources say the bus was carrying students back home to Channelview, Texas, which is in the Houston area.

A second bus on the spring break trip, driving ahead of the one that crashed, is continuing on to Texas, the sheriff said. He estimated there were about 45 people on the bus.

According to Loxley Police, I-10 eastbound is shut down because a tour bus has fallen off a ravine.

Officials from the Baldwin County Sheriff's Department and Mobile Fire and Rescue said the ravine is estimated to be between 50 to 60 feet deep.

Several people were injured and taken to area hospitals, some by air ambulance.

Rescuers had to repel down into the ravine to reach the bus, and some passengers were evacuated using ropes, Mack said. The interstate was closed down in both directions after the crash. He said at least one person had to be cut out of the wreckage.

Injuries range from minor to critical, and that at least one critically injured passenger was taken to the University of South Alabama Hospital, the only level one trauma centre in the region, reports.

The bus was operated by the First Class Tours charter company out of Houston.
