President Donald Trump's longtime personal aide John McEntee was sacked because he is now under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security for serious financial crimes, a source familiar with his firing told CNN.

Only time will tell whether McEntee is actually guilty of anything, but the fact that he was escorted from the premises without being allowed to gather his belongings is proof that some in the federal government view him as a potentially serious threat to law and order. In particular, WSJ indicated there was an issue with his security clearance.

McEntee is the latest in a series of departures by West Wing officials, including communications director Hope Hicks and staff secretary Rob Porter.

A source tells CNN's Kaitlan Collins that "McEntee was sacked because he is now under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security for serious financial crimes", although the source also emphasizes that these potential crimes are "not Trump related".
