Nikolai Glushkov, 69, was found dead at his home in southwest London on Monday.

Police are describing his death as "unexplained".

In recent years, Glushkov lived in the United Kingdom as he had been granted political asylum there in 2010.

Mr Glushkov is said to have not believed his friend had taken his own life, and told the Guardian: 'Too many deaths [of Russian emigres] have been happening'.

Glushkov had worked for Russian airline Aeroflot and at Berezovksy's LogoVAZ auto company.

Berezovsky was found dead in March 2013 at his ex-wife's home in Berkshire.

British media said Glushokov, 68, a businessman, had associated with a prominent critic of the Kremlin, late oligarch Boris Berezovsky, who died in London in 2013.

Berezovsky is one of 14 Russians whom U.S. intelligence services believe were assassinated in the United Kingdom, according to an investigation by BuzzFeed News.

"An investigation is underway following the death of a man in his 60s in Kingston borough", the police said, adding that "at this stage the Met Police Counter Terrorism Command is leading the investigation as a precaution because of associations that the man is believed to have had". It said "it was not yet clear whether it was murder or suicide".

According to the RBK Russian news site, Glushkov was found guilty of abuse of power in a financial scandal at Aeroflot, and was convicted in absentia of fraud past year for allegedly stealing more than $100 million from the company. He concluded: "I don't see anyone left on it apart from me".
